Reviews
- Edited one year agoA brilliant duo performance, recorded at Sweet Basil, NY in '78. There is some tremendous listening and communication happening here, as each artist succeeds in making the other sound good. A few of Hall's favorites such as "Big Blues", "Waltz New", and "Osaka Express", but the real showstopper here is "Fly Me to the Moon", which is an exploratory flight unto itself. Musicians at this level are at liberty to improvise very freely, reacting to each other's whims.
Having transcribed a number of Hall's pieces, I was also pleased to find a booklet with his solo to "Waltz New", fully transcribed. Score.
If this record is your thing, definitely pick up "Alone Together", Hall's '73 duet with Ron Carter.
Pretty nice clean recording and nice tone from both artists. There's some ambient sound from the club such as clapping, but otherwise very quiet ambience. 4 stars. Recommended. - Overlooked lp in Jim Hall's discography. For me, it's one of his best in that he is at his most fluid and adventurous. Great recording.
