Reviews
- My copy looks quite pristine: no warping, no rough edges. However, it does suffer from the aforementioned loud noise floor that is present overall on the album.
This is more noticeable on the B side, where the songs tend to have softer intros. It's especially extreme on 'Rest,' but you can pretend to find some analogue charm in this song in particular.
Overall, I'm going to keep it, as the actual quality of the music is decent, but I guess I'll mostly stick to the digital version. - The album is a good one after what was a dud or two for me. Full of pathos and heart. My white pallas press is quite warped and semi pringled. The mastering is good enough, better than a digital copy i heard first but its cut mega low so the vinyl noise floor is ruthlessly exposed. Thankfully, mine is a quiet one which is mostly typical of the German Pallas plant (much better than its US counterpart imo for defect rate).
Hope to add the black cooy soon too. - Edited 9 months agoUnder You is the best song Grohl has written in over 20 years, didn’t see that coming! Tragic backstory aside (RIP Taylor) the rest of the album isn’t up to the same standard, unfortunately, but it’s still a step up from everything FF’s done since the snoozefest Sonic Highways.
- Rarely disappointed with a Foo Fighters vinyl. This one did not disappoint either. Sounds fantastic on my system.
Only thing I would want more, is a Gatedold and perhaps spread over 2 discs as a 45 🙏 - Edited one year agoI expected better from a Pallas pressing. Good sound, but the record is warped and appears to have been trimmed with a saw...
- Probably the most powerful Foo Fighters record of them all! Clearly the emotional outcome of losing Taylor Hawkins and his mom Virginia In the same year was clearly impressed in the record. The cover, empty, the message "for Taylor and Virginia", and the title tracks. The singles are really good but is in the 2 that the real gems are hidden: (Beyond me, The Teacher - 10 minutes of powerful rock, and Rest to close the album at its best). Dave Grohl recorded the Drum parts and.. you can hear it.
One of my all time favorite record since no more than 2 weeks already. Musically I hear some reminiscence of Sonic Youth, somehow Nirvana, somehow the first decade of Foo Fighters and probably never as this time, great lyrics.
On another note, I also had trouble reading the lyrics. I got the white vinyl just because there was no other version, but I am very happy with this choice anyway. Probably -speaking as a FF fan- this is my favorite record of the year! - Edited one year agoNot a very convincing pressing unfortunately. Quite narrow soundstage and a bit muddy sounding overall. I guess they just squeezed too much music on one disc, around 24 minutes per side is a bit too much for quite bass heavy music like that.
The pressing itself also isn't great, I have a constant level of surface noise that is noticeable during quiet parts and it's even pressed slightly off-centered (which doesn't affect the sound though). I have to say that I have more and more not so great experiences with Pallas pressings lately, which is really sad as they were one of the top pressing plants out there before the vinyl revival resulted in a drop of quality almost everywhere.
Lastly I don't understand why this release is so expensive (around 35 bucks in Europe), the packaging is pretty plain quality, with not much content, a simple lyrics sheet and a printed inner sleeve. So yeah, this whole thing is quite disappointing - except the music itself of course, propably my favorite Foo Fighters album! - Edited one year agoMust admit, I’m disappointed. The music and songs are really good, but it sounds like I’m listening to the vinyl through a thick curtain. Production is below par. Compared to say a RHCP vinyl. Also, paper inner sleeve; advertised as limited edition (it’s not)… C’mon Dave - get a grip of what you’re selling bro!
Edit: the music and songs are not just really good, they’re awesome; maybe Dave Grohl's best ever… shame about the production…
