Why not just release this en masse? Or at least, enough so the true fans can get a copy and not some super limited 800 copies? Why tool up to press only 800?

Rather than queue outside a record shop for two hours (to probably be told the shop's staff and mates had all the allocated copies) I pooled my travel costs and what it would have cost if one was available after a two hour queue and bought one off eBay. Was it worth it? Not particularly, the vocals on the Joy Division are muffled and not particularly impressive though the music is lovely and clear, an instrumental would have been much nicer. The New Order side sounds perfect and its nice to have a new pressing of this classic release, but at £30 not that nice!

Incidentally, I checked how many copies had been sold on eBay and it was over 250 copies within a couple of weeks of release with a few copies a day being listed consistently for the next couple of weeks, plus quite a few copies listed on Discogs that I've seen. That means half the limited edition were used to fleece the people who really wanted a copy. Personally I think this whole Record Store Day business is pretty wack and it would be nicer if record companies like Rhino instead showed a more benevolent attitude to their customers the other 364 days of the year.
