This is a wonderful capture of the Mardi Gras Indian Culture from New Orleans with the Meters backing George "Big Chief Jolly" Landry and others of his tribe. It's groovy for sure, the Meters are the backing band so obviously, but I think the real value is from the "modernization/popification" (not sure what the right word would be) of such an interesting subsection of American culture that most have no idea exists unless they're from the area. It got a boost from the wonderful show Treme (how I got here) but years after that show ended, I think more people should still hear this music and know about the Mardi Gras Indians.

For the album, it's great. I just have a very minor nitpick and that's I really think Indian Red should have been A1. It's the song I associate most strongly with Mardi Gras Indians and it just straight up rules. In fact, I probably would just switch sides A and B. The B Side is the strongest of the two with most of the classic Mardi Gras Indian chants, at least the ones I'm already familiar with, are on there.

Incredibly minor sequencing nitpicks aside, great album. Listen to it.
