My second favorite Wilburn album, the first being "Seven Gates." All of "Guitar Grimoire" is great, but "Birth of a Witch," "Love Call," and "Witch's Will" are undeniable standouts if you ask me. Those three tracks are really exceptional and warrant owning the album all by themselves.

The whole record exudes an atmosphere in which the silence between the notes is just as powerful as the music. It's marketed with a bunch of equally ridiculous and beautiful copy about esoterica and psychic energy. The album is meant to be used as a meditative tool, and if you're someone who does actually like to meditate with music, then this record is one hell of a trip. Meditating with music could be considered as kind of a recreational form of meditation to many, but I don't think there's anything wrong with the union of meditation and fantasy, and having records like this can make that all the more exciting. I've personally found that these songs can really weave powerful fantasies about evil, mysteriousness, love and power, and my only criticism is that the record is over all too soon. But I suppose that's better than overstaying your welcome.

It looks like The Numero Group's recent reissue is the only one it's ever had, and considering Burchette's disinterest in his former music career, it may very well be the last. The prices of the originals are already quite high, and it seems the reissues have been climbing up in price and rarity the past few years as well, so maybe don't wait too long to find one if you're going to. It's a special one.
