- If you needed a drummer to play on your krautrock album in the 1970s, Harald Grosskopf was the guy you called. He was a member of Wallenstein and played on albums by Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze, You and Cosmic Jokers.
Synthesist was Grosskopf’s debut solo album and was recorded while licking the emotional wounds of the departure of his longtime girlfriend. He borrowed a bunch of synths from the band You and got to work on a more accessible take on Berlin School/kosmische electronica with bittersweet melodic hooks and infectious grooves. Reissued in 2011 by Rvng Intl. and in 2014 by Bureau B, Synthesist has found a new audience raised on younger electronic artists. It should thrill fans of Tycho, Steve Moore and Majeure.
