Reviews
- This album pretty much has Instant Funk as the backing band.
- This is a feel-good album.
I picked this LP up on a whim in a used bin and I was very surprised by how good it actually is. Yes, there is a disco flavor here but, aside from the obvious single ("Shame") it's more of a solid up-tempo R&B album with some fantastic horns. It would likely feel right at home on mid to late-70's Motown roster.
Opening track "Smooth Talk" is a corker, though it feels like they maybe should have faded it out about 2 minutes sooner than they did. Other notable tracks include "I Don't Know If It's Right", and the very amusing (and dance-able) ""Til I Come Off The Road". The only slow track on the album is the album closer "The Show Is Over" which has a nice vibe to it, and the only dud (IMHO) is "Dancin', Dancin', Dancin'" which does feel like dated colour-by-numbers disco. Of course, the classic here is "Shame" which still makes you wanna shake your butt.
I would rate the album 4.5 stars, but there's no option for a half star.... It really is a hidden gem and you should pick it up if you're into Northern Soul, Funky R&B, or even Disco. It got me up and dancing while cleaning the house and singing along even to songs I'd never heard before. Can't say better than that. - Glad to see I wasn't mistaken. I remember there being multiple versions of this LP when I was a kid. I'm so glad to see it really existed and someone has it, as proof.
