An amazing record from 1976, ‘We’ll Give You a Buzz’ is probably my fav NZ LP, combining prog and rock exceptionally well! Guitarist Phil Whitehead shines, bassist Alan Badger is in fine form and the legendary Ritchie Pickett contributes greatly on vocals and effects. Totally recommended, if you can find it. Best track: “Our Children (Think About)”.

This is the brilliant debut album from New Zealand band Think. Often regarded as one of the best 70’s NZ prog-rock albums. In good company with Dragon and Ragnarok’s first two albums, Split Enz’ ‘Mental Notes’, the Schtung debut and ‘Clockwork Revenge’ by Airlord. Think’s sound is full of great expressive lead vocals from the late-great Ritchie Pickett, cool swooshing, spacey synth sounds, busy bass, driving drums, glistening guitars and complex harmony vocals. Also check out that fabulously intricate cover art; what the heck is that all about?

Listening to this, I was sure I was hearing one of those many American "pomp rock" prog bands of tha late 1970s. But, no - these were from New Zealand circa 1976! They certainly have that Starcastle, Styx, Kansas, Journey type of sound - although they were no doubt inspired by UK bands like Yes, Genesis or even Supertramp. Not a bad one overall, if a bit too "pomp" and forceful for its own good.
