Reviews
- This album was recorded live at Grande Parade du Jazz festival in 1979. Quality of recording is good, although Pinetop Perkins' piano is unfortunately rather buried in the mix.
All players are highly skilled blues musicians, and performances are solid, although bit too laid back for my personal taste. IMO album lacks certain intensity that makes a great blues album. Tracks are pretty lengthy so both guitar and piano solos are abundant. Perkins is in fine form and he keeps his solos short and sweet. Unfortunately Johnson is more prone to excessive wandering, and oftentimes he runs out of fresh ideas way before midpoint of his solo. At times Johnson's playing might get rather tedious to listen to.
Pressing is great and album plays nicely. This album is certainly not bad, but it doesn't stand out in anyway either. Die-hard blues fans or collectors might want to pick this up, but casual listeners will do just fine without it.
