Original review for the 2015 box.
An impressive piece added to my collection, but was it worth it? To first comment on the package and visuals I have to say that this is a beautiful box. The 2 LPs have thick and sturdy gatefolds that feel premium with lyrics inside, likewise with the EPs and singles that come with their own 7" plastic sleeves for outer protection. These will last a lifetime over Im sure. The only less than stellar part is the paper steps of sorts, that hold and separate the different sleeves in the box. Its thin and hollow but serves its purpose if you are careful. Mine was already damaged when it arrived however. To fix bends I recommend stuffing the hollow areas with cardboard or other filling material. This should help keep its shape. The extras like title cards and posters are all nice as well.
To comment on the music Id say its very well made for this set. I cant compare with any originals so dont take it as a definitive best version. But on its own the pressing is quiet enough and mastering just right for this type of music. The only negative might be if you look carefully at the deadwax in a strong light you can see the bubble like surface which usually indicate bad vinyl used or wrong temperatures set on the press itself but luckily it still plays rather silent except for the runout grooves where the blury surface is. The deadwax might be better on the 2011 box but the loud mastering would cover it up even if it was an issue, at least for AOtS which GOLDEN did a stellar job on as usual. SAEs mastering for Avery Island has Jeff Magnums voice a little weaker at times but its still good. Both can get a little taken back and sound less dynamic when it gets busy but it could just be a stylistic choice for all I know. My favorite song, Holland 1945 I feel especially lacks those dynamics and needs more bass. The 45RPM single actually sounds better on that track despite being a picture disc and closer to the spindle. But you can see that the groove space is much wider on the single and therefore has wider cuts and better dynamics. A smart resolve for those who really like that song, I just wish it wasnt a picture disc.
In the end I have mixed thoughts. The overall quality is good but I dont find myself taking it out too often. Its a bit of a hassle depending on what you want to play. But if you really gush over all of NMHs work then this is absolutely something you will love. The rest would do best by just sticking to the albums you like for now, the asking price of around 150$ is too high to justify a handful of plays. I myself am still glad to have it and hope to appreciate its entirety more in the future.

Edit: The runouts match the original press exactly so I think its more likely they made new stamps from those. Some also say the 2009 reissue of AOtS sounds better in that regard so pick that up if you dont want the box.
Despite that I think its a smart resolve. Having original cuts in the box to please the purists while also adding upgrades in the form of the singles for those wanting the better sound on a few lacking tracks.

I love the boxset. It is pretty great, but I have Version 1 of the "new" version which "preceded the larger, and now sold out, pressing of the NMH 001 box set. There are 200 available of each version" This quote is taken from the Walkingwallofwords.com releases page. I want to make a new version, but I am really bad at submissions and do not know precisely where to begin.

I agree with the previous reviews re the fit and finish of this set and the great sound quality. I didn't own a turntable until I heard about and purchased this vinyl-only set.

A very nice box set. The fit and finish is great and it is nice to look at. I just wish they would have made the albums 180 gram audiophile copies or just as good as the previously released 180 gram copies. They also skimped on the liners as they are the el cheapo white scratchy type. Other than that it is awesome! Can't wait to see these guys in February!

I feel there needs to be at least one comment about the torn inverse pyramid holding it all together.

There is no need to pay the excessive prices listed here. This item is still available for $88 plus shipping from walkingwallofwords.com

Also, for anyone who is wondering, the sound quality is excellent, nothing to worry about. It's the packaging that is the real winner here. I've seen boxsets like this thrown together in a cheap sort of way, but that isn't the case here. The designers of this thing really knew what fans wanted in a set like this.
