Reviews
- Edited 17 years agoModern English are one of my favourite bands of the early 80's, because they combine melodic songs with gloomy atmospheres. I find both the claustrophobic postpunk sound of their early work and the synth-driven wave style of the After The Snow / Ricochet Days-period enjoyable, but I lost track of their post-4AD work.
This compilation is a fairly good introduction, which shows that Modern English have more to offer than the 'college hit' I Melt With You. There is also a good article about their history in the booklet. My favourite piece on this cd is the furious Swans On Glass.
What I find unforgivable is the absence of Someone's Calling, my favourite Modern English-song. Though it was a single, it has been omitted here in favour of various album tracks. For historical purposes it would also have been nice if their first single Drowning Man was included, which is not available on cd as far as I know.
