A little over four years ago, I made what would be my last-ever trip to dance music doyen Dope Jams' Brooklyn location to see what magic I could get before they moved upstate. Little did I expect upon entering that I would leave with this bootleg of two absolutely essential Moby recordings. Asking the clerk for some ambient techno in the narcotic vein of Newworldaquarium, I was immediately handed this 12 with a look in the clerk's eyes that simply said, "Trust me." "Mobility" is taken from Moby's debut EP of the same name and while "Go" tends to be the track from that release that everyone knows, this is the cut that truly demonstrated how deep Moby's understanding was of house and techno as an emergent genre. "Make it Mine" by The Shamen is more on the traditional side, featuring a hip-house breakbeat and vocal sample into which Moby injects a truly singular sensitivity, rendering the track into a gausous house jam unlike few others. Essential purchase for all lovers of ambient, druggy house music.
