Reviews
- The definitive 80's sounding 80's movie soundtrack. The movie was equally good too. This pressing also sounds phenomenal!
- It's a shame Wang Chung shifted to a much more pop orient songwriting style after this banger of an album. I like a lot of their hits afterward, but they never got back this hard sexy edge.
- Quintessential 80' soundtrack. Tech gone into the red here with synthesizers, samplers and drum machines merging with some really great lyrically descriptive vocals. Jack Hues and his musical partner really took that sound they carved out with Points Along the Curve and pushed it further into darker more industrial territory. There's the percussive energy like the heat and motion of a city like LA and then you have that Asian flavor juxtaposition-ed into the mix with the sampled shakuhachi (yes remember Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer!).
This music fit the movie (if you actual remember it) to a t. A real shame that WC never scored another film because on the merits on this score they should have been offered the pic of the litter. I was lucky to have seen the band perform at Disney World at my grad night so Mr. Hues & company will always have real estate in my music library! Now we need a remaster with bonus tracks! - really nice edit of B1 here: https://www.discogs.com/DJ-Nature-Edits-Volume-1/release/3016865 - yeah yeah
- a stellar album, underrated soundtrack by far from the duo known for just hits in the 80's. The B-side to this album really shows what they are made of with such tracks as City of the Angels and Every Big City showing their more experimental side they are not that well known as a whole
5/5 - Watch the movie if you haven't, one of the best car chases of all time and amazing 80's aesthetics. Live and Die in LA is one of my favorite songs of all time and this album is one of my favorite spins.
- ESSENTIAL 80'S SOUNDTRACK, cheesy ? who knows, it's just so powerful when you hear it while watching this crazy good movie -
- It's easy to dismiss Wang-Chung for their Eighties cheese that was belched repeatedly on popular radio, but this recording deserves immense credit as a model of all that was good about the decade: Creativity, energy, exploration, passion...
The album is in two parts. First are four vocal tracks (side A on vinyl) which are good, ranging from relaxed to tense. Only 'Wake Up Stop Dreaming' displays a hint of pubescent Eighties drama, but is still a clever, energetic track. 'Wait' is taken from the 'Points On A Curve' album and has a bass-line to be reckoned with.
The instrumental side really shines. 'Red Stare' is a dark, beatless, piano track not completely out of place. 'Black, Blue, White' is a brief, high-energy romp that wants to be five minutes longer. 'City Of Angels' and 'Every Big City' are in my mind a pre-incarnation of what became Trance. Driven, intelligent, intricate, and with a complexity that is refreshing in today's cut/paste/loop music-scape.
Unmistakably Eighties, but timeless. I wish these guys had reemerged in the Nineties with a new bag of tricks the way Underworld did.
