Another overlooked Australian classic from the golden days of Brisbane post-punk, however, this single does fetch decent prices due to its Able Labelness and its M Squaredness. It is also housed in a beautiful hand-screened cover enhancing its overall collectability. There are some colour variations among the different covers too, for example, one version has the band name and photos screened in green, another in dark blue and on my copy its a kinda fleshy pink.
Its technically a double A side - labelled (A) & (a) and both sides are excellent listening with a sparseness that sounds quite similar to that striped sunlight sound of the early Go-Betweens (before Before Hollywood) That's not surprising given that Lindy from the GoBs is on drums, which reminded me how instrumental she was to their overall sound. Apparently its Grant on bass moonlighting as "Candice" - one wonders what Robert was doing at the time? Maybe frocking up in some other band? Or is he perhaps the mysterious "Jacqveline" on tambourine?
This is the only release by Four Gods. Andrew Wilson later formed Frontier Scouts and if you like Four Gods you should definitely check out their single, When Daddy Blows His Top.
An American label reissued the Four Gods 7" a few years ago and it's much more available and affordable if you are not a crazy collector or have simply given up the chase...
