    It's no surprise that Donald Fagen has always hated synthesizers. You'd never know this from listening to either "Century's end" nor "Shanghai...", as both are synth and drum machine-laden, and are the better for it.

    "Century..." was from the "Bright Lights, Big City" soundtrack and was a perfect fit for it, although it only plays during the ending credits. It really is one of his best songs IMO.
    Moving onto the B side, "Shanghai Confidential", with it's full on electronic assault, is pure bliss. Fagen even used a drum machine here! Not too many Fagen instrumentals I could name, and I doubt too many are better than this one.
