My fav on here is Detroit. 1995 was really about intelligent Drum and bass with Metalheadz and Moving Shadow both putting out some magic.
If you like this then also try the 'Storm from the East' comps on Moving Shadow.

I first heard Lemon D - Solaar System on the radio around the time this album came out but didn't know what it was until I bought the album recently. Its a fantastic Metalheadz style fusion of funk jazz and heavyweight DnB.

It wasn't house, it wasn't techno, it wasn't electro... it was something totally different! Probably my own first encounter with Drum'n'Bass... This music totally blew me away at the time, because it seemed so hectic and pumping yet at the same time also calm and soothing.

I can agree about the Locust-track being the best one but the general level of quality is pretty high. Nearly all the tracks are highly enjoyable and most remixes here are totally new tracks, using only very few elements of the original. The best example is probably Alex Reese's version of Kenny Larkin's "Loop 2"
The main ingredient in those days was JAZZ: lots of saxophones, trumpets, big bass sounds, drum-patterns, loops, and samples. Those sounds give the music even more class and have nothing to do with the aggressive dancefloor madness that was still to come later on. That's probably why I used to make love to this with my first real girlfriend...

To me this stuff doesn't sound the least bit dated, even after more than 10 years. Together with Goldie's "Timeless" and Aphrodite's 1st album, one of my most cherished d&b-cds!

This is a reasonable compilation of nice, mostly downtempo and jazzy, drum & bass. The best track here is easily the remix of Locust's 'No-One in the World' (labelled as the DJB mix on the singles) which uses a deep brooding intro, sweet female vocal line, simple poignant riff and interesting percussion to create a moving and entrancing tune.

Sadly this album marked the rather sudden demise of R&S's famous 'In Order to Dance' series; in fact even the full concept of the sixth instalment wasn't fully realized. The 2CD compilation listed above was sub-titled 'Session 1', the idea being that a subsequent 'Session 2' album would cover the usual IOTD techno selection while 'Session 3' would feature demos received by the label. There were even plans for a "limited edition luxury record case" and a multimedia CDROM about the label and its artists ...but sadly, as far as I know, only 'Session 1' was ever released.
