This is a fascinating slice of micro-history that could only have emerged at a very small point in the distant past. Back in 2001 the biggest-selling mobile phone was the Nokia 3310, which had a set of synthesised ringtones, but the compilers of this record envisaged a future in which mobile phones could play audio files instead. They were about eighteen months ahead of the curve, although by the time audio ringtones became popular the compilation had been long forgotten (it attracted a certain amount of contemporary press for track 26, in which Regina Lund pretends to have an orgasm).

As a set of ringtones they generally don't work. Most of them are too low-key or would get lost in the background hubbub. Pita's "Ichiban", DA's "Stereocellular", and Farmers Manual's "Jar: FNN / Snull 2000: snull_cell" on the other hand peg the volume, so they might actually work, although they're jarring when you're listening to the record. The rest of the album is a snapshot of things that were trendy in the year 2000. The artists are mostly pale white people from the Anglosphere, plus Germany; there are almost no women. Ryoji Ikeda's "Unobtainable" is a snippet from "0º::zero degrees [1]". The tracks by New Order are taken from a remix of 5-8-6 that was released by Touch back in 1982 for which they still held the rights. Brian Eno does not appear.

There are 99 tracks but some of them have more than one ringtone. A couple have obvious problems - Chris Watson's recording of an African Fish Eagle, for example, would be useless throughout much of the Okavango Delta because it would be hard to distinguish the ringing of your telephone from the cry of an actual Fish Eagle, and the Gilbert and George snippets wouldn't work if you were actually speaking with Gilbert and George at the time. I take off three stars for these problems.

As a thing to listen to it's a non-starter. As a hipster signalling device it has a narrow range - sixteen years later the likes of Fennesz and The Conet Project don't have the name recognition they once had. I bought it as a curiosity, although it also works as a label / artist sampler - it's fun to check out the musicians on the Discogs listing. Surprisingly, Touch is still going.
