Notes

This version has different text and colors on the CDs compared to Selected Ambient Works Volume II and Selected Ambient Works Volume II
All printed text on both CDs:  ℗ AND © WARP RECORDS 1994

Track 2-1 was previously released on the compilation The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine.

All tracks (except track 2-1) are untitled, and are instead represented by photographs. On the artwork are six pie charts, representing the six sides of the vinyl edition, each pie slice representing a track (track length deciding the size of the pie slice), clockwise from top. By comparing each colour-coded pie chart with the small pie symbol on each photograph, it is possible to match track to photograph.

The artwork indicates 25 tracks, as on the vinyl and cassette edition, but there are in fact only 24 tracks on the CDs. The missing track, represented by the 19th pie slice, can be found on the CD compilation Excursions In Ambience (The Third Dimension).

Contains a booklet which folds out into a two sided six-panel display and a separate one-panel card.

This album will haunt the deepest, darkest hidden parts of your mind!! One of my most listened to albums. A truly astonishing piece of work.

Trying to found out the different track timings between each CD pressing is a mess. For example, the last track on Disc 1, is timed at 2:38 on many pressings here, it's 2:40 on my 2xCD UK repress, and on two FLAC rips I found online, both verified with Accuraterip, it's 2:44.

So either someone is putting out incorrect timings, or Warp has issues with consistency between the masters of each disc pressing they have.

Whoops did I stumble on some reddit circle jerk "great shimmering beast", I guess I care because you can fake it. Likely my least fave of all his output including power pill. It's pronounced tall if you feel like attempting shame.

Terrible quality pressing from me too. Visual blotches, crackles and overall bad quality sound. the version on Apple Music sounds better.

Yep the 1972 re-issue sounds like a 96kbps (at best) crackly, scratchy flat piece of shit.
Absolute waste of money.

I asked the author of the 33 1/3 book if he found out why only the original vinyl and cassette pressings of this album featured track 19 (commonly known as "[stone in focus]") -- especially in this digital age where it could have been released online. It's because Warp wanted to keep the original release special.

This album is a masterwork. Don't bother with the 2012 reissue vinyl on 1972; it's mastered from the quite lacking US CD.

There's those rare albums that morph into a lifestyle or at least a life altering event. Then there's this album. A vacuum into something so rare, only those 'indoctrinated' by its sounds can understand. Truly beyond description, this album is an eternal shimmering beast.

This is probably my favourite album by RDJ and that's quite an achievement considering the quality of his catalogue. It's very dark and moody in places but also warm and reflective. Please please WARP do the right thing and give us a decent sounding re-press of this wonderful album as the recent 1972 reissue makes a mockery of the original 25track album.
