Reviews
- Well, these are nuggets from the psychedelic age, there is still an overweight of non-psychedelia here as much owe too much to rock 'n' roll and other genres. The first psychedelic recording was done in the late fifties and we have had many since, but it has to start somewhere as a document and for any practical, this is still it.
In other words, you can do much worse than start here.
Just my two cents - One discrepancy I've long since discovered is the version of "Night Time" by the Strangeloves included here is in fact the shorter and inferior "single" version. The original vinyl has the unedited cut that runs roughly :30 seconds longer. I just had a look Rhino's VINYL reissue of this collection and according to the credit details listed, that version is consistent with the original vinyl @ 3:03. I can't confirm if this is a misprint or not for not having heard Rhino's vinyl version. Any idea why the CD Box wouldn't have showcased the former?
- Fantastic Box set! The music is great! The problem is (as far as I know) only in my copy, but my booklet is defective, strange you say...My booklet printed pages 19-34 twice and is missing pages 35-50. Someone help me!!! I love this boxset, but have no desire to buy a 2nd copy just to get those missing 15 pages of the booklet, when the CDs themselves are perfect!
So, A: In this day in age where everything is viewable on the internet, can anyone tell me where I can find and possibly print the contents of those missing pages of the booklet or for that matter is there someone out there who loves this box like I do and has a perfect booklet, a scanner, and can email me the contents of pages 35-50?, or where I can buy the booklet only for less than the box set price?
And B: Am I the only person who bought a copy of this box with this twisted defect?
Please let me know if you know where I can get this info, but as far as the quality of the music, I love this box, from classics like "Dirty Water" or "7 and 7 Is" to great garage classics by the 13th Floor Elevators and the Sonics to the really obscure, while not EVERY single song is Fantastic, as a whole the box is so full of great tunes that any mediocre tunes are more than made up for by the vast majority of material. I would recommend this box to anyone who likes garage or wants to hear the roots of psychedelic music(pre-acid boom of '68-71), just check to make sure your booklet has all the pages before throwing away receipt. - Edited 17 years agoBad ass compilation - I can listen to all 4 CD's without ever skipping a track. Not sure what is so psychedelic about the music, maybe you had to be there? Whatever the description, this stuff is dope (especially if you're old or hang out with old people).
