Notes
Recorded at Nadir Studios, London, England, 1981
[back cover]:
–The Litanies of Satan (from the poem by
Charles Baudelaire) devotes itself to the
emeraldine perversity of the life struggle in Hell.
–Wild Women With Steak Knives (from
the tragedy-grotesque by D. Galas Eyes
Without Blood) is a cold examination of
unrepentant monomania, the devoration
instinct, for which the naive notion of filial
mercy will only cock a vestigial grin.
Some issues contain scented record sleeve.
The vinyl in some issues are oppositely labeled.

- Where Yoko Ono's characteristic voice shrieks fail, Diamanda's win to the extreme - be it inner demons, institutional repression or the all-around hypocrisy. The only irony is, "The Litanies of Satan" is quite musical. Intense, frightening and demanding, yes - but just as liberating. Impressive how far the singer can push her voice, testing the chords, in the process challenging the listener to stare at one's own fears. The album where sound truly exceeds the medium, filling the room with sheer, fascinating horror.
- reissue incoming on Diamánda Gálás' own label May 1st with other releases on the way
https://diamandagalas.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-litanies-of-satan - Wild Women With Steak Knives is the shorter track. This can be shown through listening, as the words that are intelligible reference this.
- The first time I heard this was in HMV Manchester in 1982 (remember when HMV sold good records? A loooong time ago).
I was going through the racks and became aware of this amazing noise.... very freaky to hear it loud in a shop.
I didn't get it straight away though. A bit later I saw it 2nd hand and jumped on it.
Great record, probably her best. - Definitely NOT a record for everyone. In fact, I would imagine most folks would turn this off after about 8 seconds into it. I also believe that this is her best album. Only the adventurous need apply. Excellent recording in my opinion. 9/10
