Before Chris Coco aka Chris Mellor got into DJing he was making videos way back in the mid '80s. The big dance explosion was yet to hit and he was more inclined towards experimental noise and hardcore rock at the time.

Okapi Fever was a Brighton band who didn't record much but did appear on Various - Impact! (Auto·Edit), another Chris Mellor production, along with Sonic Youth (their track was a song left off the Walls Have Wars live LP). Marc Waterman was a member of the band before he got into engineering and production big time (check his credits).

Crucifixion Of Sean Penn was another moody Brighton band who were heavily into metal-bashing a la Neubauten. Their main man was Jack Sargeant who was still at school when their contribution was recorded. Jack later moved to Australia and became a prolifiic author and journalist, mainly writing on the 'cinema of transgression'.

Chris was going to put out a 12" by the Crucifixion but he got side-tracked by another shadowy Brighton character MC Mikey B who played him a recording of Jack Van Impe, from an album lent by Capt Sensible (never returned and subsequently 'borrowed' by Norman Cook and sampled for the Pizzaman single Sex On The Streets). This persuaded him that sampling, hip hop and breakbeats were the way forward, and not metal-bashing which ws already a ittle passe by this time.

Funnily enough, when Coco Steel & Lovebomb were invented and the Crucifixion of Sean Penn were dropped, the first single Coco Steel & Lovebomb - Crucifixion Of DONNY retained the notion of an entertainer's 'crucifixion'.

Chris Mellor and Lene Stokes appeared on the Channel 4 show The Tube to talk about this video.

That's a little bit of Brighton musical history there.
