The record label has released each of the LPs in this boxset as single LPs... do those warrant individual releases here on Discogs? Whats the protocol with boxsets broken up into individual pieces?

This collection has some of the most dynamic and and interesting tracks ever produced by Masami Akita. There are elements of the early Merzbow style which involved a lot metallic and industrial sounds, and of the middle period Merzbow's more hifi analog noise in just about every track. Over the course of an extended listening session these tracks begin to feel more like ambient soundscapes rather than the noise we usually expect from this project. A great showcase of the exceptionally wide range of timbres and sounds that Masami Akita can manipulate at will. A must-listen for any hardcore fan.

Very trippy music with beautiful photographs. They go together in a strange way.

This extraordinary release is the most important Merzbow issue since the Merzbox and should be in the collection of every Merzfan. The quality of design and materials puts this edition of Merzbient in a league of it's own. The two boxes, each housing nine vinyl albums, are solid, heavy constructions, perfectly cut and with foil blocking that combine to make something that feels imposing and permanent. Both the boxes and the album sleeves feature photography by Soleilmoon owner Charles Powne taken at Cederberg and showing astonishing, strange landscapes and plant life in amazing detail. The vinyl itself is of high quality and looks especially gorgeous in the translucent dark red version I have.

These recordings are from the period 1987-1990 when Masami Akita was carving out his name in the noise scene and establishing his reputation for visceral, uncompromising sonic brutality. However, alongside this he was recording quieter, more spacious and open music, not originally intended for release but now re-mastered and made public, firstly in the 12 CD issue of 2010 and now in this expanded vinyl edition. The sounds on Merzbient are for the most part immersive and have a hypnotic intensity and sublety that reward close listening. If your image of Masami Akita is of Venereolgy, Pulse Demon and the like you may well be suprised by what's on offer here. Pleasantly so, of course, as you follow Masami Akita on his Merzbient journey. One created using electronics, various acoustic and junk instruments and taking us into a world of drones, metallic percussive sounds, delivering up a nuanced, detailed and subtle sound world that compels attention.

This exemplary vinyl issue deserves all praise and shows great commitment by the Soleilmoon label to Masami Akita. Alongside the recent Lowest Music & Arts 1980-1983 box set - also reviewed by the present writer - we now have two splendid vinyl issues of Merzbow historic recordings issued in the second half of 2012. Nothing could excite Merzbow fan's more. Let's hope it's merely the beginning of a trend!
