Great collection of early work, yes, but some of this stuff is, as might be expected, just plain AWFUL. The first six tracks, which comprise an early live recording when WIRE were still a 5 member barrage of untalented music aggressors, are the worst material they've ever done, I don't care who disagrees, it's the blatant truth; from Too True where Lewis sounds like he's yelling 'TOOT TOOOOOT TOOT TOOOOOT!' to the total crap that is Mary Is A Dyke it makes sense as to why they didn't get very far with these songs.

Fortunately, things turn around for the better with other non-released tracks such as Oh No Not So or It's THe Motive, among others (though still not the best). With that said, the best reason for owning this CD is to get these songs, good or bad, they're nearly as vital as any of their albums in order to get an appropriate scope of their work.

The later recordings are great, from which the final recordings didn't stray too far. Some others, however, like Underwater Experinces for sure, are very different from other later versions.

Also a major plus is the booklet, which gives a great account of these recordings and other info about this period. Each recording session is seperated in chronological order, which is nice.

Basically, if you get the releases Turns And Strokes, Document & Eyewitness, and The Drill EP, you NEED this CD; not that any of these four releases are totally related to each other (except the first two) but in order to fully understand the persona of WIRE over so many decades these items really are necessary (and quite entertaining).
