Since 1998, I've been a fan of Sensations' Fix, ever since I bought an original copy of Fragments of Light, back in the day when original LPs could still be bought at a fairly decent price (that is $20-$30), before DJ Shadow started sampling their music, before the "kids" discovered their music, and consequently, prices for original LPs have shot up. This 2012 set is a real treat for fans, you get tons of alternate takes of stuff you know already (that is if you own their other albums like I do), remixes, and also tons of previously unreleased material. All the material here is from 1974 to 1977, except for one 1979 recording from when they were called Sheriff. For example, "Fortune Teller" (originally from Vision's Fugitives) is an alternate version where it's a bit lengthier than the original. "Barnhause Effect", also from Vision's Fugitives is also an alternate version as the vocals sound a bit different from the LP version. "Grow On You", on the other hand, looks like it was simply "The Flu" taken from Boxes Paradise, in fact, it seems to be the exact same version. It differs from the version of Vision's Fugitives, called "She's Gonna Grow On You" on that album, in that Keith Edwards had a more conventional rock approach to drumming over Marco Marcovecchio (whose drumming seemed more influenced by jazz rock/fusion), not to mention the vocals are different. "Fleetwood Trip L-Track" is quite a bit different from the version of Vision's Fugitives, as this version has more echo effects than guitar loops. Apparently this was the Flying Tapes version (I don't have Flying Tapes yet). There are some excerpts of Cold Nose sprinkled throughout, no remixes or anything, just clips from that album. The booklet gives you a nice history about Franco Falsini and Sensations' Fix, and it seemed that Franco was not entirely happy how Polydor released their material, where he didn't have input on how it was to be released. That probably explains the frequent habit of their later albums (starting with Finest Finger) of rerecording earlier material (usually by adding vocals to what were originally instrumental cuts).

I have often been suspicious of albums like this, because many times alternate takes and previously unreleased material usually meant embarrassing rejects that rightfully stayed off their proper albums. Not in the case of Sensations' Fix, this set is just as great as their regular albums, which means I highly recommend this album, even if you never heard anything else from them.

For those who received a defective copy, I too received a defective copy (the sound quality was simply godawful), so I let the seller I bought it from know, as well as RVGN, and RVGN was glad to send me a new copy, although it took a month, due to their backlog (because of other similar customer complaints). This new copy I received is so much better in sound quality! I was only glad I took advantage of the free download (besides the download also included some material not on the 2 LP set that you could only get on the CD).

Avoid this release! The guys from RVNG did an ambitious job concerning design, cover art and information supplied via booklet. They obviously did NOT care about the way the music (that's what counts the most!) is presented. The vinyl quality really is horrible, the music is distorted throughout and sounds like a 3rd copy tape - a project like this should be treated with adequate care, but not here. What a waste!
