Reviews
- Edited 7 years agoThough a tribute to Soft Machine keyboardist Mike Ratledge and on the consistently excellent & vital label Moonjune, there is very little connection between those points & the fact that this is labelled 'jazz' or 'jazz rock'. Without a rhythm in sight, these variegated works should be more aptly classified as electronic music, and rightly so, as Arti & Mestieri mainstay Crovella sports an arsenal of various vintage keyboards that have only the most tangential relationship to either 'rock' or 'fusion'. If anything, he fleshes out & enhances both Ratledge's and his own compositions while simultaneously unmooring them from any established pretext. The result is a brilliantly played, mood-mapping collection of dreamy ruminations that, ultimately, largely defy genre. Those expecting fiery 'jazz-rock' need apply elsewhere—if, on the other hand, you're looking for keyboard-soaked immersive, complex compositions (made more remarkable by the fact that Crovella does not use analog or digital synths), here's the ticket. Pretty great.
