Reviews
- great compilation and great sound (except for the live recording which sounds like a bad bootleg..).
but why is the original single mono mix of Sunday Morning not included like on the 2002 2CD Deluxe Edition ??? - Edited 3 years agoDid anyone have problems with their CD's sticking in the slots, with glue residue on some of the discs. That happened to my super deluxe edition with discs 1, 2 and 5. CD #1 is partially playable, but everything beginning with track 11 ("European Son") is unreadable. Both to my CD player and when trying to rip them with by DVD-ROM drive on my computer.
A shame cause this was such a beautiful package. - So here it is: the 45th anniversary 'Super Deluxe' edition of Andy Warhol's 'Velvet Underground & Nico'.
What do we have to expect from this VU/Nico collector's item after the release of 'Peel Slowly and See' and the '2002 Deluxe Edtition' 2CD?: first of all, it's not really a box set but more like a 90 page-hardcover book with original peelable banana in extended 10'' format containing six CD's inside.
The reader gets information about every member of the VU and how they perfomed, rehearsed and finally released their debut album encouraged by Andy Warhol accompanied by many glossy prints of early EPI shows, flyers, portraits of band members, reels and the LP cover itself.
Now to the music: CD1 & 2 is another stere/mono remaster of the album which is giving this masterepiece an up-to-date treatment. It really points out the difference between the two mixes and is the best digital remaster so far with a hearable difference to the 2002 release.
But what makes the Super Deluxe Ed. collectable except the up-to-date remastering of the album in stereo and mono is the Jan. 1966 rehearsal tapes with songs like 'Miss Joanie Lee' only available on bootlegs so far, now officially released. Unfortunately it's not the full Jan. 3rd rehearsal but we can hear Nico argue with Lou and singing a version of 'There she goes again' though.
Another well-known bootleg is the Valleydale Ballroom gig in Ohio presented here complete and in a great sound quality beating all those boot releases.
A clean official release of 'The Norman Dolph' acetate is presented too, missing nearly all of the clicks and background-noise.
To complete this release, there's a stereo remaster of Nico's debut 'Chelsea Girl' also released on the Verve label containing many collaborations with VU members making this an extension to the VU & Nico album. 'It was a pleasure then' would have been a perfect closing song to every VU / EPI show. But why is it remastered in stereo since most of the songs were recorded in mono except the last song? It would have been great to have a good mono remaster here.
All in all it's a great package worthy to have a place in the VU&Nico's collectors heart and bookshelf, 4.5 out of 5 points.
