Reviews
- Edited 17 years agoOne of my favourite albums. Really truly stunning and hasn't dated one bit. Beware, however, the replication of tracks from here on Excerpts, the D.E.Co compilation. Five tracks from here are on Excerpts, so only get both if you are a true completist!
- Some of the warmest, most beautiful techno not done by someone named Carl, Juan or Derrick. The Detroit Escalator Co.’s debut, Soundtrack (313), on the sorely missed Ferox label, is deeply emotional with a gorgeously electronic sensibility. From the opening strains of “Gratiot” and the reverb chords of “Abstract Forward Motion (As a Mission),” there’s a deepness that transcends genre. Oftentimes, the tracks float by as pure ambient works (such as “The Inverted Man (Falling)”), but when a rhythm does emerge (as on “Shifting Gears”), it’s not the typical kick drum. The drum programming fits the mood of the track, rather than being a catch-all 4/4 beat. Sublime.
