At last, with the new official repress I can compare both versions, the counterfeit and the official one. Please understand that english is not my mother language.

I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but if you are wondering the gear used for the test are a couple of Technics 1200 with matched Ortofon cartridges and a Rane TTm57 mixer, so I could made a real side to side comparison, playing both versions at once and swapping channels to check the differences. I used a Pioneer SA708 amp and two different sets of Technics and Marantz speakers, and Sony MDR-7510 headphones as well.

First of all, there are no track differences as some reviews say here. Both vinyls are exactly the same length, and the is no additional content in any of them.
Second, I guess this unofficial version was mastered from the cd, at least it seems so as you can notice that sound pressure is really higher in this release that in the official one; the overall volume and compression of the tracks are much bigger here. Which is not a good thing for a vinyl, of course, but let me tell you that once you adjust both volumes the quality difference is not so big. Yes, you have listened well: there's not an incredible difference, believe me. The official repress sounds slightly better and quieter -we all know about mr Young's exquisite taste in mastering- but this versions is as enjoyable as the official one.

So, if you already own this unofficial release, I'm not sure if you should buy the official one. This one comes with two printed inserts, and the official have instead illustrated inner sleeves, but it lacks of the tracklist provided in this version. I always prefer to have official releases, so I don't regret the purchase, but keep in mind that you're not going to have a different album, as sometimes happens when you compare original versions with counterfeits.

    Hope this helps :)

It seems the official release is better? I have a bootleg but it just has lofi movie sound with stupid blancs between "tracks". It skips too.

I made the plunge and I think it sounds damn good. I am not some kind of hardcore audiophile, but this is not a bad recording. This is an album that begs to be listened to on vinyl and I just wasn't going to pay the outrageous amount for the original. If they do release a new official vinyl I will gladly buy it, but until then I am very happy with this one.

How about a truly honest review of how it sounds. We all know it is a bootleg.

Wow. I purchase most of vinyl online here and forgot about this section until I saw a Vaper Records reissue of this album for really cheap. Man am I glad I decided to check this section out before I purchased. I figured although this was an unofficial pressing, the vinyl would be of comparable quality of the original made by the same guys who put it out the first time. I even assumed they would use the same master. Anyhow…big thanks to the Discogs members who posted on here and saved me some heart(and ear)ache.

This is a total failure. Please do not buy this crap. I bought it by mistake and had to return it.

I had the chance to compare the rather new bootleg which is on sale on ebay etc, with an original us version and also with a german version of the original release. the pressing of the bootleg is total crap - only half of the vinyl is used for the music - the rest is plain. completely different to the original. also the printed insleeves are missing. i only wonder, why there is no such discussion concerning Eldorado, because the same thing happened there too ...

There is no official reissue (Germany or US) of this double LP. As of today (March 2013) any Neil Young Dead Man vinyl LP on the market that was not produced in 1996 is not legitimate, it's a fake probably made from a CD... this entry in Discogs database should be deleted, it misleads readers to believe there is a reissue when it does not exist.
