It's unfortunate that this is a Space Age release as it could very well be the quintessential Spacemen 3 tome. Perfect Prescription was already the bridge between the duo's early Nuggets/VU/Stooges garage fixation and the dream rock that they would explore henceforth. What this compilation does is dedicate an entire CD to each side of the equation.

Disc 1 is basically an alternate, in my opinion improved version of Perfect Prescription that strips away the lo-fi murk that plagued (some would say enhanced) that album and offers up a much clearer, threedimensional sound. Not only that, but pretty much every song except "Take Me to the Other Side" gets an alternate version that is "more everything", more layers, more guitar tracks, more solos, more feedback, more keyboard drones, more strings, more horns etc. This brings the sound of the album closer to the holographic netherworld the group explored in Playing with Fire. All this amounts to an alternate version of the album which in my opinion, ends up being THE definitive Prescription.

Disc 2 on the other hand offers demos of several Perfect Prescription songs which are rawer than what was present in the original. Not only that but there are several unreleased studio versions of covers. All this amounts to a big helping of the group's molten proto-punk. S3 always had some of the best guitar tones around but these tracks are something else, they give the likes of Fu Manchu a run for their money.

Like I said it's a shame this is a Space Age release, though I'm not sure if there was much animosity between the label and band back in 2003 when this first came out. The mastering seems to have been worked on by both J and Sonic Boom with the latter even offering up some liner notes for the compilation. Oh well, let's hope things are worked out between both parties someday and that this material gets a legitimate release as it's the cream of the crop of what this group offered to the world.

It would be nice to have these versions pressed on vinyl, in the original album order and another disc for the remaining tracks. However, there is a comment below about the band receiving very little or no royalties from this label. That's a shame. If they could get that hammered out I think this would be a coveted item in vinyl format.

Great comp, but I still prefer the original album. Still, it's nice to hear these more elaborate versions as a collection of songs - it doesn't quite flow as an album in this form.

Don't buy anything from this label. According to Pete Kember (sonic boom) they have a history of really screwing over the band who get little to no royalties from their releases. They're apparently attempting to take legal action. Here's a link to PK explaining the situation -----
