Reviews
- Pulled this disc out as part of my "grunge" revisitation. Years ago, I enjoyed this album quite a bit, but it never was a favorite. I played the singles from the album quite a bit but never got too deep into the rest. Surprisingly, I have enjoyed my revisitation of this album more than I ever enjoyed it in the past. While the production is a bit cleaner than my tastes in this style of music, it still fits the songs so well. The band is so tight and cranks out damn near perfect performances of these instrumentals. Lanegan does his thing as usual, and while he's not my favorite vocalist, the talent is obvious. The way he picks his spots to insert his dominant voice into the instrumentals is very calculated and wise. There are some really great psychedelic/fuzzy guitar flourishes on here too, much like Lanegan's vocals, it picks its spots to add some flavor to the instrumentals. The aforementioned clean production accentuates these moments and makes the fantastic playing even more prominent in the mix.
As hinted at before, I find the album to be a bit tame and pop-oriented for my tastes at times, but the previously mentioned strengths nearly nullify any sterility. Also, the songwriting is just so damn good. Nearly every track is perfectly crafted and finds itself burned into your brain after a few listens. I'll enjoy pop-stylings all day when they're done this well. - One of the best records in my collection. Lanegan helps me to 'breath' better in this fuckin world.......
