I am not an expert on Afro pop having been exposed to a few artists such as Salif Keita, Femi & Fela Kuti and perhaps Osibisa but this is my first exposure to MR. Dibango mainly because Laswell and Herbie Hancock are personal favorites. Having said that this is nothing short of a lively more modern well "1980s modern" take on Afro-pop with a definitive laid back sax soloing on occasion. The music like all African is rhythmically driven and hypnotic with classic 1980s Simmons drums, Fairlight/DX7(all amazingly performed by Hancock) and Bill Laswell holding down the bottom end with damn funky basslines.
If you like that retro tech sound along with great melodies and a very positive upbeat form of Afro pop check this disc out you will not be left in cold harsh Nordic musical wonderlands. Music meant to be bright, warm and ear friendly!!
