Reviews
- The American singer/songwriter Tom Waits has been since the 1970s as one of the most influential pop musicians. Are hard to fathom music is a mixture of American and European styles such as jazz, blues, cabaret and classical music. Then in 2002 the message came up that he wanted to release two albums at the same time, found anyone that foolish and irresponsible commercial. However, it is understandable because the albums Alice and Blood Money have many similarities. The albums are both based on plays by Robert Wilson and the songs layers in both cases for several years on the shelf. However, there are also differences in terms of both music and in terms of atmosphere. Where Blood Money pretty gloomy and melancholy sounds, does something more cheerful and more airy to Alice. The original 1992 play was about the relationship that writer Lewis Carroll would have had with the girl that later would be the main character in Alice in Wonderland. It is a rather surreal story and so does the cd as well. Waits sings with his singular voice a number of sensitive love ballads but for variety there are also some cheerful waltzes. This is a typical cd you need to hear late at night with the lights off and a glass at your fingertips. Alice is a new high point in the career of Tom Waits.
