Book Of Truth I Book Of Horizons

Mixed at Forking Paths studio. 'Which is still just the same three microphones and mic pres as the last two records. The laptop is used for remote recording, and we added a more stationary one for mixing/assembling.'

Danny Heifetz's drums recorded at Toast (RIP) in San Francisco.
Ches Smith's drums and Jennifer Cass's harp recorded at Pine Creek Studios in Aptos, Ca.
John Merriman's drums recorded at Bear Creek studios in Felton, Ca.

'Everything else was recorded on location in a hundred different places, and then brought under the microscope at Forking Paths.'

'Exterminationg Angel has a couple Penderecki samples and an Arvo Part sample.'

'Thanks are in order (yet in no particular order), to Pete and Nancy Spruance, Richard Levy for the microtone guitar, Revolver USA for putting up with our shit, Tim Smolens for computer geek advice, Fatima and her whole family for existing, and all the musicians who commit themselves so thoroughly to our project.'

The writing credit for The Indestructible Drop is in scare quotes: "written" by.

Not quite sure what this is about. I suppose a revolving cast of people surrounding and dropping in and out of the Secret Chiefs ensemble? Sorta hit-or-miss for me for that reason. The more grindy-y, black metal-ish tracks under the name Holy Vehm I didn't care too much for but Form and Traditionalists are very clever, different andinsteresting to see what they do next! Is it "lounge"? Retro...something...and spaghetti-western, and noir jazz and weirdly 60's "library" type music that adds a bizarre "low quality" among the very high quality sounds. Like, adds a "cheesy synth" (like some of the German, bedroom lounge / disco acts of the 70's when keyboards first became mainstream?) in there among the guitar and bass (ex.'The Exhile'). Overall, very very good. Next track, "On the Wings of the Houma" sounds straight out of Mr Bungle's Disco Volante (?) period. Overall very good and pretty much the pinnacle of spooky-kooky, metal, exotic eclecticism that (as far as I know) only SC3, Mike Patton and John Zorn have really explored!

A breathtakingingly beautiful album. Every piece is perfect. The orchestra works are dense, dramatic and majestic. The death metal sections are gutteral, brash and powerful. Maybe the heaviest death metal ever recorded. The dynamic between the blast beats, the eastern melodies and the classical works must be heard to be believed. Highly recommended. Can't wait to hear it on vinyl.
