Reviews
- The recordings are late 1950's. Don't worry about the sound (great) or background noise (not noticeable). Bliss was himself a composer and fine conductor. These performances of the marches are as good as any. Monteux was one of the most important conductors of the 20th century. He conducted the premieres of Stravinsky's Firebird and Rite of Spring as well as Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe and Debussy's Jeux. Though not quite a contemporary of Elgar-he was born in 1875 and Elgar in 1857- he was of the age. For over 60 years this has stood the test of time. This is an often recorded piece, as are the marches. You won't do better and should be had at a good price.
