The Summer Teeth release by Wilco offers some really bright songs from this talented group. But there’s something going on in the head of Wilco (Jeff Tweedy), that just doesn’t transcend to the audience in general. Four of the tracks are pure magic, “Nothing’s Ever Gonna’ Stand In My Way Again [though Wilco run all of these words together when they created the title], “How To Fight Loneliness,” “ELT” and “Summer Teeth.”

Listening to most of Wilco’s albums is like going to a Grateful Dead Show on an off night for the band. They put out some perfectly fine tunes, carefully constructed, thoughtful and well balanced ... but then there are always eight or so numbers that just don’t make any sense to me at all. And believe me I’ve tried, I own all of their material, that’s how good I think they are.

Wilco are probably the only group where I have to give a high rating simply on the strength of a couple of songs. The aforementioned four tracks are staggering, filled with life and delivered without pretense ... dig them and let the rest slip until they make sense, if ever.
