- Edited 5 months agoA literate journeying through Europa set to irresistible rhythms that they did even better with 'Sons and Fascination' (and that is clearly over commenter markimarkftm's head).
- i was the biggest simple minds fan in the first half of the 80s, my early youth...it seemed to me, that their music was like made for me, it resonates.extremely.
for me there are 2 simple minds, or 3, if you will.
the first album was more conventional and then they took of with empires and dance, followed by fantastic albums with every one sounds very different.
empires and dance paved the way for sons and fascination/sister feeling call, an amazing output.
new gold dream was more polished and commercial, but is perfect, although i do not like glittering price...
sparkle in the rain was less pop music and more energetic, i love the dynamic sound of the band.
then the downfall began, they muted into a stadium band for the masses...when once upon the time came out, i was disappointed, today i like some songs of it, but back then it was the end of my love affair with the band.
empires and dance is just amazing!
it was a radical shift from their first 2 albums and they created something new and unique.
for me the music sounds still fresh and not dated like many stuff from the early 80s.
john leckie did a marvelous job as the producer, as he did with the fall, who never sounded better than with mr.leckie!
i travel was the most radio friendly track on it, they wanted to please the label with a single, the other songs are more experimental, often reduced and very repitive and hypnotic.
you can hear krautrock influence, some bowie and kraftwerk, but it is their own sound.
at the time it was not my favourite simple minds album, but when i listen to it again after many years, i was really amazed.
fear of gods is a stunning track, a very hypnotic, even psychedelic and dark piece, that is absolute timeless.
compare that with belfast child only some years later!
they refined that music with sons and fascination/ sister feeling call, which i love so much, but empires and dance is perfect in it's own way. - Horrible 80,s drivel totally unlistenable, terrible time for music generally and this is the empirical evidence of it
- It was all down hill from here.
There was an A1 B1 of this too with WEBB’S WONDER CUT! etched on Side 2
