The excellent Luc Van Acker & Anna Domino collaboration on 'Zanna' is one of those tracks that are known, loved and treasured by a small crowd of Belgian synth pop lovers or eighties melancholists.
I remember hearing this song in the 1984-'85 era of my childhood and I forgot about it afterwards. In the early nineties it appeared again on my radar by hearing it somewhere by accident, but I couldn't get hold of the track's name/artist. Later on in the nineties there was a small revival of this track when Studio Brussels (Belgian national alternative radio) dedicated a remix series to it. This was scheduled on a weekly basis. Belgian rock-, new wave- and EBM- icons of the eighties hosted each a show by explaining what this track meant to them, taking liberty of the oppurtunity to present their proper remix.
For people new to 'Zanna' it may appear as an amateuristic demo-like tacky track with cheesy vocals ("The ship is lost in tide because I know you lied" for instance). The theme is corny: love, betrayal and a broken relationship as the result of it, but all adding to the effect. The simple arrangements, the vocal lines, wood percussion and Anna's piano all add up to the song's moody, melancholic and very atmospheric ambience. Top track for the aficianadoes.
