This is what I've put together from compiling information available at the time of release in 2009, 2011 and 2012:
* 2009: Rhino, licensing from Warner, released a remaster of the Smiths albums on vinyl in US and UK; remaster was done by Johnny Marr and Frank Arkwright * 2011: Rhino, licensing from Warner, released these album remasters, as well as remasters by Marr and Arkwright of Rank, Hatful of Hollow, and Louder Than Bombs as CD and vinyl box sets * 2011: Warner released the remasters by Arkwright and Marr as individual entries on CD, at least in Europe * 2012: Warner released the remasters by Arkwright and Marr as individual entries, on vinyl, and only in Europe * Since 2012: both Rhino and Warner have reissued some of the the Arkwright and Marr remasters, on vinyl and CD and in some cases multiple times; countries vary
Completely acceptable repress. I'm playing it on a 70s system and it sounds like I remember as a youth. I chase that sound...and the sonics are clean and warm <ortofon blue cartridge> . Unless you can score a OG mint and afford it...welcome to the world of The Smiths starts here.
The original recordings are not, even by a long shot, of "audiophile quality". So unless the CD or LP sounds really bad - and they'd have to make an effort of it, this version should do quite nicely.
Bought new, flat vinyl with zero surface noise, sounds pretty good to me, maybe a bit less dynamic than the UK and US 1st pressings but definitely worth it and considering how prices on vinyl go sky high very fast if I was you I will buy this now before you'll end up spending three times what's worth today....
