A textbook example of when not to judge a record by its extremely boring cover, Flare Up is in my opinion one of the best examples of British jazz from some of the best musicians of this era, as post-bop was morphing into early fusion. As an octet with multiple lead instruments, plus vibes and piano both accompanying, the record has a full and diverse sound that captivates. The drumming especially adds a loose yet driving feel, providing an intensity throughout that's perfectly broken up by the slower pieces, done beautifully. A must-find for discerning jazz heads!
