Nothing distinguished former Miss Lobster Tiffany’s 1987 debut from the vast field of dance-pop more than her down-to-earth presence. Even as the reassuring song structures and percolating electronics guided us from verse to chorus, it felt like she was confiding directly in our ear rather than reigning diva-like over the top persona. She sings with a bubblegum purity, keeping the messages simple and always sounding like she’s in this game for the love of it.
More often than not, it’s giddy fun. ‘ I Think We're Alone Now’ is the kind of song where you follow the elastic pulse and synth burble while trying not to dwell on daft lyrics like “and then you put your arms around me and we tumble to the ground and then you say I think we're alone now.” Typical of pop, other songs compact adult emotions into bite-sized portions that can be downed without much laboured chewing. She fantasises aloud on the weaker-than-most rendering troubled times and sudden epiphanies in clean-cut narrative terms. Maybe it’s no accident that Tiffany closes with the song “Could've Been”: for better or worse, these songs get in, do their job rather well and then promptly depart.
