- Edited one year agoSteve does it again!
Fairy rings has great electric piano playing and a loose dreamy feel like Miles Davis' 1968 track "Stuff". it sounds great coming right after the titular Beatles cover, like a spooky cousin to George Harrison's classic.
Serenity is anything but , its a proper gnarly Free Jazz/Rock work out!
It was an inspired move to hook up with Soul Media, they have the edgy abrasive sound of his first 3 albums down cold.
The prices that even a recent reissue command speaks to the esteem in which Steve Marcus is held.
Thankfully his 4 previous albums remain a little more affordable for the curious newcomer - As other have mentioned, this was, in fact, the first commercially released digital recording; released obviously as an analog LP, 11 years before Compact Disc was introduced. They used the NHK Japan PCM recorder - which ran at 13 bit, 32kHz (for comparison, CD is 16 bit, 44.1kHz). This would capture dynamic range similar to analog tape and slightly better than vinyl LP, but a frequency range (bandwidth) cutting off below 16kHz. Analog tape and vinyl extend far beyond 20kHz.
Info per various AES archives; https://www.aes.org/aeshc/pdf/fine_dawn-of-digital.pdf - Edited 2 years agothere is a reussie by beatball music (korea) out in november. 180 vinyl, remastered and cut from master tape source according to their announcement.
- The version of Fairy Rings is a great! I must keep typing because this review requires at least 10 words.
