Many soundtracks and scores amplify the mood and allure of their film’s cityscapes; in Blade Runner, we are immersed in 2019 Los Angeles. Vangelis, noted for his cinematic electronic compositions, exotic flourishes, interspersed improvisations and use of synthesizers in an orchestral fashion, did not maximise on such musical prowess until scoring Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi masterpiece, and he truly captured the city of Los Angeles in that context. Exploiting his boundless virtuosity and flowing sonic signatures, Vangelis intensified the bleak cyberpunk setting with complex musical textures and neo-classical structures so congruous that they become synonymous with the film's haunting mood and chilling lasting impression on the audience.

From sweeping synths to saxophone-laden ballads, Vangelis' compositions underline an apathetic dystopian future that slowly reveals its seductive and cold subtleties, a world in which synthetic humanity is no longer theoretical, it has become stark reality. As the synthetics poignantly question their own humanity and undergo existential crises, so pulsating and forlorn is the breathtaking visual and aural splendour of neon lights, longing whispers and noirish rain-soaked streets, the array of influences aside from the synthesizers permeating throughout; jazz, 1930s crooners to Middle Eastern forms, are incorporated into the themes, imbuing the progression of the film's narrative with a pervasive melancholy and elegiac emotionalism. At once lush and darkly beautiful, Vangelis' astonishing work is integral to Scott's vivid artistic sense, a vital component that serves to enhance the film's enchanting power and evocative qualities. It is imperative for any fan of electronic music to not only see the film in its final cut, but also hear the soundtrack in its standalone format - a wondrous experience that cannot be easily forgotten.

Rating: 5/5

* I refer all fans of the soundtrack to purchase the SACD reissue; it is this wonderful remastering courtesy of Steve Hoffman that emphasises the warmth and richness of the compositions and excavates new sonic details in the recording.

Welcome to a new experience
This edition of the album is a new perspective to appreciate a new edition of this soundtrack which what it gives us is a remastering by Mr. Kevin Gray (US mastering and cutting engineer) in a high quality DSD format for a hybrid SACD providing us not only high audio resolution but also a new sound remastered so that our ears live a new experience. I warn you that this is only noticeable in qualified and quality audio equipment (not portable or toy players). For those who have the previous version on CD of the sountrack they will notice the difference and even more who have only listened to the poor and low quality of the vinyl's audio (180gr does not mean audio quality at all just resist warping better than records of conventional weight, etc. Also because vinyl has its compressed dynamic range lower than even CD Audio and that horrible noise which only reminds us that it is an old Lo-Fi format and that all vinyl today is descended from a digital master, enough of pseudo-audiophile superstitions, vinyl is marketing only)
Almost all the important albums of the past have been remastered and this is appreciated by fans not only of Vangelis but also those of the corresponding movie.

If anyone is interested, this is possibly the best sounding digital version of this soundtrack. Sounds amazing on a good system! Rare and way too expensive though, just like the vinyl. Wish they could release the Esper edition or any other edition on SACD
