Reviews
- Listed as various artists but all the work of John Padgett (aka Johnny Jewel) albeit with different vocal collaborators. Love the vibe of the album which is very electroclash like. Check the analogue sequencer lines and plaintive female vocals. I like the dubby elements of the tracks and the use of echo. Warm in the winter could be some hidden gem from the 80's except for its of the moment production - love this trip around the world with the female talk/singer. Let's Kiss is the next stand-out track with its slow 4/4 jam and vocoded voices it could be a better Daft Punk than they have ever achieved on their later albums. Fill in the blanks is as strong but in its own shorter way feels like a slice of early underground 80's synth pop. Looking love brings the tempo down but insistent with great sequencers line and breathy vocals ' looking for love' sound like a desperate female version of Sylvester's 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight' - this is no criticism at all. Indeed it is a great track. Tempo stays low for Heart of Darkness. sounding like a chugging along Jean Michel Jarre track it is a bit filler-ish given the rest of the quality on offer. Camera is similarly slow in tempo but the male vocal drenched in vocoder and effects lifts it above its predecessor. Half Lives is a very 'electroclash' sounding track with its male vocal and vintage synth use. The possessed doesn't do it for me being too muddled in the mixing of sounds. Cherry is stronger and very 80's pop act album filler like track. Beautiful Object is lifted by its synth brass and is a fine fine tune with great production. Into eternity has a great haunting female vocal and brooding bassline that I use as an intro track for new beat sets. "I am forgiven"... The track Intimate feels like filler after into eternity but it shouldn't as it stands up well on its own.The magicians sequencer bass drives it along at medium tempo and its sparse arrangement is something i can imagine in the small hours of a DJ Harvey set at Pikes in Ibiza. Love it. Redheads feel more pain is a great closer for a strong albums worth of material. Bargain price makes it even better recommended
