Reviews
- Unless you're a Troggs completist this box set will probably do, it seems to hold all their best songs including the hits, album tracks and more obscure later things, b-sides etc.
The best writing on The Troggs was by Lester Bangs who really understood the primal motivations of the band and wrote a fabulous essay for Bomp! (I think it was ).
Once you get beneath the superficial pop side of the band you can really get to the dark meat down below. Songs like Give It To Me are really quite lurid.
The Troggs were garage punk archetypes who built a massively influential sound based on loud guitars, simplistic chord progressions and the aforementioned suggestive lyrics. Along with The Kinks, Stones and The Yardbirds they were probably the biggest UK influences on US garage punk of the mid-60s. The best tracks are genuinely thrilling, unpretentious rock n' roll at its best. Even later tracks like Feels Like a Woman and Strange Movies are essential listening.
If you get the UK version of this box set you get a third disc - the infamous Troggs Tapes. You couldn't write this stuff or make it up... the Troggs in the studio are heard arguing amongst themselves about the best way to make another hit record.
The Tapes have long since passed into legend and time may have rendered it less shocking than it was back in the day when it passed around on bootleg tapes.... but it really is hilarious and well worth hearing if you don't know it.
