Be warned. This record is quite literally in my top 5 albums of all time ever. I'm astonished that more of you are not losing your shit over this. Listen to this at your peril.

I found this CD dirt cheap in the used section at a local Eugene, Oregon record store. I was already aware of Guapo for a few years, but didn't have anything from them. I knew this group through Andy Thompson's Planet Mellotron website. His brother, bassist Matt Thompson was a member of this group and founder. The group went through many different lineup changes, with drummer Dave Smith the only constant. Here the group also included keyboardist Daniel O'Sullivan. Apparently their earliest releases don't seem to get very good reviews, but this later release, Black Oni is simply amazing. This was the followup to Five Suns, and this is truly up your alley if you like that more extreme end of prog. RIO influenced by Zeuhl, strong Crimson influences, with reminders of Magma, particularly the heavily fuzzed bass playing that reminds one of Jannick Top, and of Univers Zero, but in a much more rock setting. The drumming is simply incredible, and there's a bit of a Canterbury influence, particularly when O'Sullivan gives some dreamy electric piano that goes against the noisy backdrop of fuzzed bass and guitars, but O'Sullivan can just be as noisy on his keyboards. This album is divided into five parts, the last part including some nice Mellotron parts.
I guarantee you this is the kind of prog that'll cause the average Marillion or Spock's Beard fan to come running and screaming for the hills. Not for those want to play it safe. Incredible stuff I highly recommend.
