- "Behind my complex there's a neighborhood bar/where I find what I want without looking too hard/I get drunk; I get high/and when I come down, it's the same old place, it's the same old town/I run, I hide, I can't get away/I keep coming back to this dirty city". This verse is one of the most gut-punching pieces of lyricism of all time, and this album is a criminally overlooked chunk of noise/garage/punk gold. God Bullies occupy a spot on a list of 'those bands' - imagine there are a bunch of people at your house, and you want them to leave. Put on God Bullies and crank it up really loud. The lame people will leave; the cool people will stay. Other bands on that list: Godflesh, Big Black, The Slits, NON, Unsane, Cows, and Thrall (God Bullies vocalist's band after GB).
- This album really f*****n' rocks. This is the only release by God Bullies that I have had the fortune to hear and I was only led to it by Alternative Tentacles. AT released one gem after another in the 90's, the 80's stuff doesn't even compare, to me.
There are two bands that God Bullies sound like to me 1) Paw and 2) Walls. They definitely have the "sound" of the 90's and a lyrical content more in tune with Paw, but this is way better than Paw. Paw kind of petered out real quick... though I loved the band, there just wasn't enough drive, enough swagger. That's exactly what God Bullies have: swagger and attitude. I believe everything they rock out, it's not just a show. Still, they are a bit more heavy than Paw (hmm? - a different kind of heavy) and in this way they sound a bit like Walls to me; they have the dangerous hardcore edge that just doesn't give a f***, that comes with angst ridden surge after surge.
Favorite lyrical lines? "Detain my brain", "How many girls have you slept with?".
