- Edited 7 months agoAlbum Revolution #3:
There's always that ONE album that, if you are a lover of Music, just makes you very much aware on why you fell in love with Music in the first place. ....For me it was "That The Way Of The World", by "Earth Wind & Fire"...
Based on the Film, with the same name, Produced and Directed by "Sig Shore" (and starring a very young "Harvey Keitel"), It is definitely my FAVORITE album by "Maurice" & Co...."EWF" also starred in the Movie, but as you have probably figured out, it was very forgetable!!!!!
I was only 4 1/2 when this album came out and it BLEW ME AWAY!!!!
They scored their BIGGEST HIT (and 1st Crown Jewel) ever in "Shinning Star".... It is instant "Funk" for your mind, with THUMPIN' Bass, BLAZING Guitar, and the introduction of their Horn Section, "The Phoenix Horns"; "Rahmlee Michael Davis" (Flugelhorn, Trumpet), "Louis Satterfield" (Trombone) and "Don Myrick" (Saxophone)....
The "Title Track" (2nd Crown Jewel) sends shivers down a Musical spine, with the ULTIMATE Guitar solo by "Johnny Graham"....
"Happy Feelin'" is just a good time jams session...
"Yearnin' Learnin'" is another jam, with the kind of message song "Maurice" wanted to accomplish...
The Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel in "Reasons" will go down as their most beloved Ballad...."Phillip" shines ever so brightly on this one, and from this point on "Maurice" got smart and made sure "Phillip" had at least one song to work his Vocal mojo!!!!!!
Then there are songs like "All About Love" (4th Crown Jewel) with "Maurice" showing off his Vocal dynamics as well....
For those who feel like "Earth, Wind & Fire" loss their love for "Jazz", "Africano" (the 5th Crown Jewel) will prove that theory wrong!!!
Then there's the 6th Crown Jewel, "See The Light", which has another STUNNING Vocal performance from "Mr. Phillip Bailey"!!!!!!
By this time, the group also perfected their 'Interludes"....Even though they are not labeled, the first 2 are definitely "Larry Dunn" doing his thing....The 3rd one with "Maurice" on Kalimba and "Andrew Woolfolk" GETTING DOWN on Flute...
There was one more addition to the group, "Maurice" and "Verdine's" younger Brother and Drummer, "Fred White" (who just finished playing for "Donny Hathaway")....
I didn't know it then, but looking back I realized that from now on I would base EVERYTHING else I heard from this PERFECTLY CRAFTED album....There are certain albums you have to really promote, but not this one...This album SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!!!!!!!
PS: Rest In Peace to "Mr. Fred White"....Drummer Extraordinaire!!!!!
PSS: 7/5/2024.....Not that this MASTERFUL CROWN JEWEL needs it, but because "Sony/Legacy" Released on CD Reissue in 1999, a 2 LP Reissue SHOULD to be RELEASED!!!!!!
They include the following "Original Sketches (Previously Unreleased)":
"Shining Star (Future Star)"
"All About Love (First Impression)"
"Happy Feelin' (Anatomy Of A Groove)"
"Caribou Chaser (Jazzy Jam)"
"That's The Way Of The World (Latin Expedition)"
Now honestly, I believe that there was more, but that was neither here or there, IT STILL SHOULD BE DONE!!!!! - this was the first record I played on the new mid - fi stereo that I bought after college. I had been used to all in one student crap and got a yamaha cr-800, dual 1258, and a pair of large advents. needless to say, listening to this record on my new set up was a revelation. I thought it was perhaps because of what I had been used to but even today "shining star" leaps out of the speakers and phillip bailey's soaring "reasons" is heartachingly beautiful. it transports me back to those days in 1975 in a way few records effect me. the copy I have is an original 1975 first pressing and the production is astonishing. I like this record.
- Hi folks,
I just received a copy of this record that appears to be an original 1975 pressing. Unlike the sleeve in pictured on the discogs page for this record, my copy has a barcode on the back. Anyone know if this is a 1975 pressing? Barcode 0-7644-33280-1.
