Sure, it would be nice to have a vinyl re-issue of this, but with ALL the music from the soundtrack, on 2 discs...however, orchestral music does not fare well on vinyl due to the quiet passages in the music. CD is a far better medium for this genre.

I used to check the Craigslist ads every Saturday morning for garage sales with "vinyl" or "records" listed. Quite often this activity produced nothing of value or interest, but occasionally I would get lucky and my diligence would be rewarded. One morning in particular there was a single sale advertising records that was about four miles from my house. I drove up and saw the family selling various items from tables and boxes lined up along the driveway. There were two boxes of records, and as I began to thumb through them, I started to think, "Here we go again." And then there appeared what I couldn't believe, a near mint copy of The Shining OST. I checked the disc and it looked as if unplayed. I asked "How much are the records?" and was told the price -- two dollars. SOLD! Nothing else of value, but I finally had my long-sought copy of The Shining. Cleaned it up and played it, and was amazed at the sounds emerging from the speakers.

The soundtrack album on LP was withdrawn due to problems with licensing of the music. The LP soundtrack omits some pieces heard in the film, and also includes complete versions of pieces of which only fragments are heard in the film.

Still no official CD version anywhere? What is the holdup? This would certainly sell.

There was a Japanese double-LP release as well. Its not in front of me, can't tell you how the tracklist differs...

Love this soundtrack, but if it ever sees a reissue, change the cover art! A gatefold jacket would also be nice! I have the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange, which I’m also a fan of, so maybe a jacket similar to that?

That this classic OST has had no official properly remastered CD re-issue is criminal!

It's a shame this doesn't include Al Bowlly and Ray Noble's performance of "Midnight, The Stars and You" my opinion, the best piece of music in the movie.

Music Identity can be defined in a scientific or technical level, like, as they say, "an identity function, which is a permutation or transformation of a pitch or pitch class set into itself". But there's another level of Music Identity which applies to the Music taste. You can draw a parallel in the Cinema domain, or any other discipline if you want. In other words, what emerged from your personal Culture, fruit of what you learned, experienced, lived. At this point, very few Movie Soundtracks can match Stanley Kubrik's 'The Shining', specially for the presence of the Avant-Garde 20th Century composers György Ligeti, Wendy Carlos & Krzysztof Penderecki. A collection of timeless musical treasures that shine as high as the movie itself.
