Reviews
- This album is fantastic front to back! I have some noticeable surface noise on the last 3 songs of the B-Side but it isn’t too distracted where it pulls you out of the music.
- This review is based on my listening experience using a custom built U-Turn Orbit turntable with a built in Pluto amplifier & a Ortofon 2M Red cartridge paired with Edifier R2000db powered speakers.
I’m not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination but I’m an aspiring one.
The pressing is solid. Very, very quiet. The dynamics are a little less impressive than its silence but overall a good pressing!
As for the music, I think this is the Broken Bones’ most complete album — start to finish. I hate to say that because I’m a fan of all their work. But each time I hear Half the City, it’s simply a cut above. The most soul, the most polished funk, etc. It’s the Broken Bones at their best!
Love this record, definitely a prized possession in my collection. - Pretty good here...perfectly flat and silent wax.
Sound also well mixed, albeit just a tad flat...but the vocals still shine through.
Great experience all in all...of this doesn’t give you goosebumps, you’re dead. - Pick! Excellent record from a rising Birmingham talent. Paul Janeway is the answer to the corners of the music world that find their singers restrained. The devout background Janeway experienced growing up can be felt in his delivery which makes the record sound at times like a big-tent revival.
The Otis Redding influence is strong throughout, and in the best possible way. As a fan that listened to absolutely nothing but Otis for several years, I am not at all turned off by this expansion of the soul sound, which sounds nothing like Redding, and is similar only in approach.
Fans of this could look to Redding protege James Govan, the Capsoul and Prix labels of the seventies to explore other under-appreciated but essential soul documents.
The band is currently on tour, and well worth traveling to see.
