Clydie King is a fantastic singer, and appeared as a backing vocalist on hundreds of rock and soul records in the 60s and 70s. So a record of her own is a natural, right? Well, sort of. Although she's got an all-star crew of musicians backing her, and some reasonably good songs, somehow this Lp just doesn't pull it off. It's pleasant pop-soul in the mid-70s manner, but for some reason the hooks are not strong enough to really make it stick. The standout tracks are the ones where her sweetness gives way to an earthy growl, like the re-working of Sly Stone's "Dance To The Music". (Re-working may not be a strong enough word; it's been re-written and re-arranged so much that it's own father might have a hard time recognizing it.)

It was a good effort, and she might have made it as a solo artist given a second chance. Unfortunately, Chelsea was on its last legs, and no follow-up followed up.
